Nothing close to the thrill of discovering the true nature of your inner power. When we recognize the archetypes that are actually guiding our lives, as bestselling author Carolyn Myss tells us in her book Archetypes, “you step into the core of your being, perhaps for the first time. It’s as if you have finally put on the clothing you were destined to wear.”
So here are some new archetypes for you to try on. And if the “N” fits, please wear it!
Whether by land, sea, air, or armchair travel, the Navigator’s native roots are in the Visionary family. When we think Navigator, we think first of Christopher Columbus, who set sail from the Old World to find the round one and discovered America. He could not have imagined how much rounder and smaller the world would one day become or the millions of Navigators that would follow in his archetypal footsteps. One path leads to the next, and the Navigator is called to find and follow them — the ones well traveled and the ones less known. The Navigator sees the way, moves ahead with tenacity and courage, and leads others. With or without the technology, you are by nature a human GPS.
Welcome another member of the Visionary family. The Nerd archetype has evolved from being just the gawky guy without social skills to an obsessive in the Chess Club to Bill Gates, who advised his audience, “Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.” True, that. Today we’re even being blown away by their beauty — take actress Megan Fox. A self-proclaimed Nerd, she loves comic books and wants to “one day go on an archeological dig.” If you are a Nerd, you are brilliant, having “the last laugh,” and hopefully wearing a perpetual smile. It looks perfect on you!
You may not be Florence Nightingale, Nurse Betty, or Gaylord Focker. But if Nurse is in your archetypal pattern, you are embedded in the Caring family. By nature you relate to what the legendary Clara Barton once said: “The door that nobody else will go in at, seems always to swing open widely for me.” You are an angel on earth, whether on duty in a hospital or on call for a child home with the flu. Your uniform is compassion. And nobody wears it better.
If this is you, you’ve got your finger on the pulse. Your archetypal families are Creative and Intellectual. You’re a news junkie who may or may not enjoy it as your profession.
And hey, have you seen this? “Everyone has inside him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don’t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential can truly be.” That was recorded 66 years ago in the diary of a young girl. Her name was Anne Frank.
And it’s still news today. News that chills me each time I read it as she speaks to what is at the heart of archetypes. Look within. You do not know how great you can be and what you can accomplish until you awaken to your personal archetypes.
With grace and gratitude,
