Who’s the first Teacher who changed your life? Probably the one in grammar school who put a gold star on your psyche and its message was I HAVE A PURPOSE. MY LIFE HAS WONDERFUL MEANING! And because you are lucky, that star stuck long after your education ended.
I am blessed by the Teachers along my path who have inspired me, who continue to inspire me, to be who I am and never let go — to be an eternal student. If you are a Teacher, this is your very nature, and your power. I have had many Teachers in my life, and each became a part of my being. These Teachers have come in the form of parents, siblings, friends, and my own child.
When the student is ready, as the saying goes, the Teacher appears. My tribute is to my Teacher Caroline Myss, who first appeared in my life twenty years ago as an Author, then a Teacher and a Mystic, and who today is also a sister and friend. On the January 2013 cover of O, The Oprah Magazine, Oprah describes Caroline as “one of the wisest women we know.”
Here is a speck of the wisdom I gleaned from Caroline Myss. I first heard of this Teacher as a gifted medical intuitive, ahead of her time, and author of the best-selling book Anatomy of the Spirit: The Seven Stages of Power and Healing. This book opened me to Caroline’s unique understanding of how and why people get sick. I have not looked at an ordinary headache the same way since. I could not wait to soak up every word of her bestseller, Why People Don’t Heal and How They Can. Her voice whispered to the voice inside of me, which confirmed, “Yes! this is what’s right for me, too.”
Teachings can have an exponential impact — on a single student, on all that student touches, and so forth. Caroline teaching led me to her DVD set Self-Esteem: Your Fundamental Power. It was then that my soul began to heal in a profound way. I was awakening to living fully, being present in the moment, and loving it. I bought copies for everyone I loved who would listen.
True wisdom helps us soar to the skies. And that’s where I was headed when I purchased Sacred Contracts. This book was about archetypes — the subject that first rocked my world when I read Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype, written by Jungian therapist Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes. Now, years later, Caroline (not a Jungian therapist but a Seer, Mystic, and Teacher) was presenting a new and rich take on this subject that I had not imagined possible. My soul shifted. I had no other words to describe the experience until I went on to read what I believe is Caroline’s finest writerly moment, Entering the Castle: Finding the Inner Path to God and Your Soul’s Purpose. I entered the castle with her and have never looked back. My life now belongs in this world, but also to something well beyond this world.
It is for this and so many other reasons that I am grateful to my teacher and friend for writing the introductory book Archetypes: Who Are You? for the archetypes.com website. This book makes simple what Caroline believes we all really want: “to be madly in love with the life you have and realize that everything you do counts.”
The book is the teacher. Archetypes are the tools for getting to this transformation. What greater wisdom will we ever gain?
With grace and gratitude,
