Do any of these V’s sound like you?
If you’ve read and dog-eared the pages of the classic travel book l,000 Places to See Before You Die and added more must-sees and -dos to your bucket list, this archetype is likely you. You are the kind who sees a getaway not as a luxury but a necessity. Your archetypal family is Explorer and Intellectual, whether you’re in Bermuda or your backyard in a hammock. You make your own adventure. An unexpected bout of uncontrollable laughter can be a vacation. The scenic and the unseen beckon you alike. And these words of Maya Angelou map your route: “Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.” Some more than others — that is, if this is you. Lead the way!
In Jane Austen’s day, the Valet was the manservant to his wealthy employer, keeping his wardrobe and appearance in order, accompanying him on business trips, overseeing the rest of the servants, and attending to “his duty to place the body-linen on the horse before the fire, to be aired properly” (whatever that meant). Flash-forward to Jeeves and James and the hilarious drag/“house boy” Agador Spartacus in the movie “Bird Cage” (with the hilarious Hank Azaria); and you see that times have changed. You are not a slave but a personal assistant who is a Caregiver — and a bit of a slave to the Fashionista. You do not ask “You rang, sir? But “You texted?” You are a trusted concierge empowered by your impeccable eye and attention to the detail of quality. Whether you earn your living as a Valet, butler, or wardrobe designer, or are simply at your best treating yourself like royalty, GQ has nothing on you.
Although people may not know “what planet you come from,” no doubt your roots are Creative/Performer with a strong dose of Intellectual smarts. Genius, phenomenon, or freak of nature, your musical nature (classical, generally) comes to you early, easily, and, well, awesomely. If you were Mozart and one day, at four, were sitting at the piano playing a concerto from memory (and adding the backgrounds), you may have been one in a zillion. But today, although no one seems to know why, Virtuosos are arriving on the scene faster, younger, and with a furious gift and hard-earned chops to match. Give you a symphony, a baton, and an orchestra to conduct and your arms will bring together a world of magic. Put you in a room with a baby grand and life is pretty much perfect. If your virtuosity happens to be a guitar with a serious amp, a soundproof room may be appreciated by your neighbors (I’m just sayin’). Is this you?
And last but never least:
As Carolyn Myss tells us in her book, Archetypes: Who are You?, “Those of you with this archetype give birth to new ideas that shape the destiny of humanity… the Visionary and noble Rebel often go hand in hand.” And depending on your vision for the arts, politics, business (the list goes on and on), your archetypal families can include everything from Creative to Fashionista. One thing is for certain: You all see. As Malcolm Gladwell puts it, “The Visionary starts with a clean sheet of paper, and re-imagines the world.”
When you take the simple and fun quiz on this site and discover your archetypes, you may begin to reimagine a world for yourself and others beyond what you ever dreamed possible. What could be more victorious?
