While the fashion world may indeed be espousing skinny selvedge jeans or claiming ascots are a viable alternative on dress-down Fridays, this doesn’t necessarily make them appropriate office attire. Don’t precipitate an awkward conversation with your boss by sporting a trend that needs an explanation.

While a familiarity with the latest trends is important — you don’t want to be left behind — the fact that something is new doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better. While you may find your boss’s thought processes stodgy, he’s seen a lot come and go. If he’s saying, “Let’s wait,” it’s important to listen.

While sporting the very latest in briefcases, gadgets, bespoke suits and whatnot brings you joy, if it’s easily apparent that it cost more than a week’s salary you’re sending a message that you either a) have poor impulse control or b) don’t need that raise. Be mindful.
