Some Spiritual leaders who start out with the best intentions may be influenced to change when they realize that they have a large and captive audience of faithful followers. They use the same charisma that brought them to their positions of power to abuse and defraud.

This can manifest itself in financial ways with the bilking of millions of dollars from the faithful. 

It can also result in sexual abuse or the abuse that comes with brainwashing followers so thoroughly that they lose all interest in the outside world and become incapable of maintaining basic family relationships.
